I’m Diogo Neves, a translator and linguist from Portugal.
I’m completing a BA in Translation at NOVA FCSH. I work mainly between Portuguese and English, and I also take on Spanish-language work when the project fits. I completed complementary study in Language Sciences as part of the degree.
The part of translation I enjoy most is the last stretch: when the meaning is already there, but a word still sounds imported, the register is slightly off, or the sentence needs to be rewritten so it feels natural to the person reading it.

How I work
I translate for the person who has to read it.
That usually means more than finding an equivalent in another language. I look at who is reading, what the text is trying to explain or make them do, and how that kind of text is normally written for that audience.
I check terminology, register, consistency and meaning, but I also read the target text on its own. If a sentence only works when the source is beside it, it is not finished yet.

Tools & languages
The tools are part of the process, not the voice.
I use Trados Studio, memoQ, translation memories, terminology databases and Subtitle Edit. They help with consistency and workflow, but the final wording still has to work in the target language.

Beyond translation
I also know what it is like to be on the other side of the text.
Building Morly and working in operations at Bubble B have put me inside product decisions, customer questions, interface wording and day-to-day business communication. That experience helps me understand the context a translation will actually live in.
